THE BIRD SANCTUARY:
A BONE OF CONTENTION
Once again, during the Christmas/New Year period, one of our visitors to Deneys-ville was rudely taken to task for fishing within the confines of the so-called Bird Sanctuary.
The comment of the person who had been accosted was that whilst he did not mind being asked to leave the area it was the officious manner of the person who accosted him, and the threat of being reported to the Police that really annoyed him.
Sadly, Deneysville has earned the reputation of being dirty, boring and now unfriendly. As someone recently described it, it is nothing more than an ugly Free State village alongside a big, brown puddle. We can't afford to sully its reputation even further.
The person responsible for enforcing the no-go zone which the bird sanctuary has become might better use his or her time making the area more user friendly; as things stand at the moment, not only is it unattractive for humans but no self-respecting bird would take up residence in its bleak confines. With visitors being unwelcome, and few people venturing into this protected zone, it has been overrun by rodents and, consequently, snakes. A resident in one of the nearby houses was recently hospitalised after being bitten by a poisonous snake in her back yard, and snakes have been venturing into people's houses this summer.
Let's be honest, the bird sanctuary has been created purely as a
